GHS-TV to debut four new shows

From insightful conversations with today's top songwriters, to the soulful stories found in Tennessee's past, Germantown Community Television's award-winning programming lineup should get even better in 2009.

Named the best community access station in the nation for 2008, Germantown Community Television (GHS-TV) will welcome the New Year with four new shows. Songspeak, Travel Television, Sharing Miracles and Humanities Tennessee all debut on GHS-TV in 2009. Each series brings a unique element to GHS-TV's already diverse programming.

Songspeak highlights conversations on the art and craft of song writing. Each episode features professional songwriters from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Many of these ASCAP artists have written at least one Top 10 hit. The hour-long program has been in production since 2007, and is the brain child of an assistant professor from Middle Tennessee State University's Department of Recording Industry. Used as an educational tool by the MTSU Department of Recording Industry, Songspeak tapes in front of a studio audience of MTSU students. The show will debut on GHS-TV by early spring.

Travel Television covers the world of travel, with a special emphasis on volunteer relief efforts in the Gulf Coast. Each 30-minute episode features interviews with travel writers, personalities and experts who offer inside tips for both the business and leisure traveler. These international travel stories take viewers to exotic locales, but the show's purpose goes way beyond highlighting luxury expeditions. Travel Television also details the experiences of everyday citizens who use their vacations to help rebuild the hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast. The first show in the series even coincided with the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Producers say the goal of the program is to use the stories of those who have volunteered to encourage others to plan their vacations accordingly. Travel Television airs for the first time on GHS-TV Monday, Jan. 5, at 7 a.m. Along with its Monday 7 a.m. slot, the show will air Tuesdays at 1:30 a.m. and Thursdays at 7 a.m.

Sharing Miracles brings quite a few famous faces to GHS-TV's lineup. The show features stories of real-life patients who have overcome medical conditions. In most episodes, these real-life patients are stars in the entertainment or sports worlds. Some celebrities who have shared their experiences include talk-show host Montel Williams, Academy Award-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden, Emmy award-winning actor Joey Pantoliano, pop icon and Broadway start Deborah “Debbie” Gibson, NFL greats Len Dawson and Jerome Bettis and Olympic gold medalists Mark Spitz, Bruce Jenner and Greg Louganis. The 30-minute public affairs program already reaches more than 50 million homes on over 200 television stations across the U.S. Sharing Miracles debuts on GHS-TV Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 7 a.m. Aside from its Wednesday 7 a.m. slot, the show will air each week on Saturdays at 7 a.m. and Sundays at 4 a.m.

Humanities Tennessee brings a significant and in-depth look at the history and culture of the Volunteer State. Whether the topic is society during the Great Depression or the sanitation workers strike in Memphis that preceded the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., each hour-long program studies the life, language and literature of our region. Humanities Tennessee seeks to create a sense of community across the state through educational programs in the humanities. Humanities Tennessee debuts on GHS-TV Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 7:30 a.m. Aside from its Wednesday 7:30 a.m. time slot, the show will air weekly on Saturdays at 8:30 a.m.

Germantown Community Television is located on the campus of Germantown High School and serves as the community access station for the City of Germantown.

Brian Kelsey files bills on police, taxes <b>

Representative Brian Kelsey (R-Germantown) and Sen. Reginald Tate (D-Memphis) filed a bill recently to address the police officer residency issue facing Memphis. The bill will prohibit large police departments like the Memphis Police Department from discriminating against police officers based on where they live.
