Local Regional History and Genealogy Center completion nearing

By Maxine Hunter

For area genealogy buffs that wait longingly for the completion of the Germantown Community Library Regional History and Genealogy Center, the wait will not be much longer.

At the meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Monday night, July 10, a professional services agreement with design consultants Askew Hargraves Harcourt & Associates in the amount of $6,500 paved the way for the completion of the roof of the Pickering Center that will house the genealogy and history library.

The library will house the contents of the noted Davies Plantation Genealogy Collection once the building is ready.

In December 2005 the Board authorized a $31,800.00 agreement with the consultants to design renovations to the Pickering Center and the Germantown Community Library Regional History and Genealogy Center. During the initial phase the projected construction costs exceeded the funding and resulted in changing the project scope, excluding the Pickering Center and the Germantown Civic Club Courtyard improvements. These improvements were submitted as separate projects in the Fiscal Year 2007 Capital Improvements Program.

In adjusting the project scope during FY06, it was understood that the design of the roof replacement for the Pickering Center would be able to continue from where it stopped. Askew Hargraves Harcourt & Associates halted progress at the 60 percent design stages. This project in general includes the removal of the existing flat roofing system and installation of a sloped, seamed metal roofing system that will match what is being installed on the Germantown Community Library Regional History and Genealogy Center.

The design of the sloped metal roof for the Pickering Center and the Germantown Community Library Regional History and Genealogy Center, including style and color, went before the Design Review Commission and was approved on February 28, 2006. The construction contract for the renovations of the Germantown Community Library Regional History and Genealogy Center was approved by the Board on May 22, 2006 and will be completed the first of October.

"By approving this professional services agreement the design will continue with the intent of having construction commence upon completion of the Germantown Community Library Regional History and Genealogy Center," City Administrator Patrick J. Lawton said, adding that construction time is estimated for 90 days.

And that, for genealogists, is very good news.
